guidelines contained on the CMS Website. We will discuss the process of
implementing LCDs during the transition period, the processes in place
now, and the reconsideration process. We will also navigate the WPS
Medicare Website and show you information on correct billing of Medicare
Claims. Correct billing means getting your responses and payment in a
timely fashion.
Physician Quality Reporting Initiative 2007, 2008, 2009 and Beyond
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) instituted the
Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) in July 2007. We will
discuss the procedure in place in 2007, the incentive payments, and the
reports available to providers. We will next provide information on the
2008 procedures, different reporting methods and the anticipation of
incentive payments. We will next talk about the changes in this program
beginning in 2009 with the inclusion of a separate bonus possible with
E-prescribing. Lastly, we will also show information on the penalties

MGMA St. Louis February 11, 2009
Luncheon Meeting
Speaker: William F. Jessee, MD,
FACMPE, FACPM, President and CEO of
the Medical Group Management
Association
Topic: State of Healthcare 2009
Description:
The US healthcare system is facing unprecedented challenges. Rising
costs, increased consumer demand, personnel shortages, and administrative
complexity combine to create a perfect storm. Many physicians are
retiring from their practices or seeking employment by hospitals, rather
than continuing to cope with the rapidly changing environment. At the
same time, some medical groups are finding extraordinary opportunities
and are achieving high levels of quality, safety and financial
performance. This presentation examines the major trends impacting
medical practices and the organizations with which they interact, and
explores some of the strategies being used by successful medical groups
to thrive in a time of tremendous environmental turmoil.
About Our Speaker:
William F. Jessee, MD, FACMPE is President and Chief Executive Officer
of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), the nation’s leading

Medical Association (AMA), where he led the AMA’s activities in clinical
guidelines, quality improvement, and accreditation. He also holds
academic appointments as Clinical Professor of Preventive Medicine and
Biometrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in
Denver, and as Adjunct Professor of Health Policy and
